Bronxton sat down with Will XX, the owner of Blaque Salt Studio in Salt Lake City, Utah. Will moved to Los Angeles when he was a child and later served 9 years in the U.S. Army. Both California and the army sculpted Will into the artist he is today. Tattooing professionally since 2006 and going on 15 years of experience, Will XX talked to us about his passion for art, the unique quality of tattoos compared to other art work, as well as the love people have for his work. He prefers working with large-scale black and gray pieces and is known and sought out for his skill with these complicated and grand designs. His focus with each piece is on the art and fun of tattooing. “Its not about making a bunch of money for me, its just about having the clients and the projects that really allow me to express myself the most.” Will believes that success will follow you if you pursue your passions.
The uniquely permanent nature of tattoos inspires Will. “Having my art walk around on living canvases, it’s the most amazing concept to me. My canvases choose me … It’s an honor to really watch my work walk around.” Tattoos are such an interesting and different form of art this way. Tattoos are a much more personal form of art. Because of the lifelong nature of the ink, tattoos have a more personally important and individual meaning than other forms of art. This uniqueness sparks creativity and passion in both the tattoo artist as well as the customer.
